Symbolia Writer and Illustrator Spotlight

EI4Vo_7hmsFkptIPI_W6jd5ZRUJGuZJ8U1Ova3rBvbgWhat’s going on everyone? Some of you may recall that I’m working for this super cool comics journalism tablet magazine called Symbolia? Well we just started doing little interviews with the brilliant people behind the latest issue, Heroines.

We want to bring you closer to the story and the people actually on the ground doing the reporting. So far we’ve talked to Dan Archer, the writer and illustrator of “Meera’s Story” and Jess Rulifsson who illustrated “The Decisions.”

Check out the interviews right here!

I tried to dig a little deeper into the motivations and feelings behind their work, and then include at least one silly question, sort of a “and now for something completely different” moment. I like the way they’ve turned out and I’m happy to share these bad boys with you. We’ll be doing one a day, so be sure to check out Symboliamag.com often for more!

Symbolia, APM, and the Public Insight Network Tackle PTSD and Moral Injury

Hey everyone, I have some totally awesome news. Symbolia has teamed up with American Public Media and the Public Insight Network to bring Invisible Injury: Beyond PTSD, a comic focusing on “moral injury” to life. It’s a stunning piece of comics journalism, and if you have any interest in war, the military, or psychological trauma you absolutely need to check it out.

The reporting is top notch and the narrative is both clear and readable. It’s not always easy to work in talking heads, but Andy Warner straight up blew me away with his artwork. Not only is page layout phenomenal, but the entire tale is both dark and foreboding, but approachable and humanizing at the same time.

MI_1-web-9301Symbolia is incredibly proud to have collaborated on this project with so many incredible individuals and organizations to publish such a exceptional piece of comics work. Give it a read!

Symbolia – On of the “Top 5 Magazine Apps Challenging the Medium”

Screen shot 2013-05-31 at 1.03.18 PMYO! Everyone, I have awesome news! You’ve heard that I’m working for Symbolia right? The all-new, all-incredible tablet magazine of illustrated journalism? Well just the other day MediaShift, PBS’ media blog, highlighted it as one of the Top 5 Magazine Apps that Challenge the Medium!

“Who needs Newsweek when you can read Symbolia?

Symbolia takes advantage of the iPad format to experiment with a new style of reporting. Its stories use not just illustration and text to tell stories, but also include audio clips, animation and interactive elements in the digital storytelling experience.”

That is so so so righteous to see! Ms. Sivek is right, Symbolia isn’t just a tablet magazine. It fosters unique and captivating stories and introduces readers to fascinating people, places, ideas, and issues in a beautiful synthesis of comics, journalism, and interactive media. It offers an entirely new experience for readers accustomed to print and web-based journalism.

Back and Better than Ever

It’s been a while since my last post but I’ve been hella busy. I hope you can forgive me. That being said, I’ve got some cool news for you guys that I’m excited to get out there. Firstly, I’m a master! That’s right, on May 5th I graduated with a Masters degree in Digital Rhetoric and Professional Writing from Michigan State University! Where did the past two years go? I just want to give a shout out to all my awesome, intelligent, and supportive classmates and professors who helped me out along the way. You’re all tall glasses of alright.

Second thing, remember my interview with Symbolia’s Erin Polgreen? Well I was so smitten with what they were doing over there I asked if I could help them out. They totally said yes! Now I’m a Digital Fellow working on all kinds of cool stuff, copy editing, social media, secret fun projects, the whole deal. You can check out the announcement over at Symbolia’s Tumblr and while you’re at it, if you’ve got a tablet device, why don’t you check out some issues and see if you’re into the mag? It’s pretty righteous so if you get a chance you absolutely should!

Oh and did I mention that Symbolia’s other co-creator Joyce Rice did this awesome illustration of me? Sweet mother of grud it’s awesome!

Illustration of me
It’s a me!

I’ve got more awesome stuff coming down the pipeline, though I may be moving this blog somewhere else in the near future, but no worries, I’ll be talking to you soon. Stay classy.
